Speaking on this issue recently was Laurent Fischer, Nintendo Europe’s Senior Marketing Director, at a WiiWare event in Germany. He didn’t believe that Wii owners were having issues with the amount of storage available, stating that “most people are happy with what they have.”
Currently, the Wii has 512mb of internal flash storage, this can be used to store game saves, music, photos, classic virtual console downloads and new games from the recent WiiWare service. The Wii also supports the use of SD memory cards up to 2GB; however, data cannot be read directly off them, requiring transfers directly to and from the Wii itself.
It seems Nintendo is wishing to keep the Wii as uncomplicated and user-friendly as possible. As Fischer adds, “Of course, we could increase our technology and add a hard drive, but then what we lose is simplicity and accessibility, which is one of the important things for us. We want our consoles to be easy to access and not cause headaches.”
Recently, Nintendo’s President Iwata made comments which hinted that they are looking into a possible solution. Speaking to investors, he admitted there “are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small,” and they had to “review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience." However, it seems this won’t be coming in the form of an external hard drive attachment any time soon.
