Time Magazine Readers Vote Shigeru Miyamoto Most Influential Person of The Year
Posted by Nick McCavitt, 11 days ago May 5, 2008 19:39

The results of a poll among readers of Time Magazine were revealed earlier today. The readers of the publication have named Nintendo’s Senior Managing Director, Shigeru Miyamoto, the most influential person of the year. Miyamoto, who is the creator of the classics Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Star Fox series, accrued a grand total of 2 million votes, which placed him 300,000 votes ahead of the number two nominee: the Korean Pop Star Rain. Miyamoto also ranked ahead of other famous names, such as Heidi Klum, who was ranked in 4th place, and the Dalai Lama, who was placed in 207th place.

Now there’s a headline for you: Donkey Kong more popular then Dalai Lama.

Here’s what Time Magazine had to say:

PRO: As if creating Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda weren’t enough, the "father of modern video gaming" is still designing franchises for Nintendo and its best-selling Wii console. His latest, Super Mario Galaxy, redefines VG physics once again with its springy re-imagining of that old chestnut, gravity.

CON: Can he reverse gravity for all the obese, video game-playing kids out there? Miyamoto himself has said that the purpose of his Wii Fit game, with its balance board and full-body focus, isn’t to make you fit, but "aware of your body." Aware enough to go outside before atherosclerosis sets in?
