GTA IV DLC Exclusivity Has Gamers Guessing

According to recent reports, Microsoft has explained that its ’exclusive’ DLC deal with Rockstar means that each episode of content will be ’equal’ to the San Andreas and Vice City games for Ps2/Xbox. In addition, delivery of the GTA expansions will be available via digital download. ’Exclusive’ means that no other system will have DLC content for GTA IV.

What this appears to mean of course, is that if anyone was going to play the Vice City/San Andreas versions of GTA IV, the 360 is the version to get. The first expansion is slated to arrive as early as fall of this year, followed by another one in 2009.

GTA 3 Vice City and San Andreas, were basically expansions of GTA 3. Major expansions are expected for GTA IV - but no prices have been set forth as of yet, which will be determined by Rockstar. Assuming it is successful, DLC may become the new way to deliver future GTA expansions.

Commentary on the boards of course is mixed as to how this will affect everyone. Some noticed that it was never said that anything will be offered for free. It may be cheaper in the long run; however, most likely, there will be no freebies involved.

As to the worthiness quotient, many seem to feel that Vice City is a good example of something that could have been DLC for GTA 3.However, where San Andreas is concerned, not so much. GTA IV isn’t really considered as big as San Andreas (although it may have more missions), so it appears doubtful that the DLC will be.

While a few have guessed that GTA 5 may become Xbox exclusive, the consensus seems to be that this will not happen. However, with Frontlines, Fable 2, NG2, Too Human, Gears 2, Halo Wars, Left 4 Dead, and XNA - it really does look like this "exclusive content" deal further sets apart the 360 from the competition.

As is usually the case, no one knows for sure. Regardless, it would seem that this new deal is a great excuse to go with the 360 version, rather than the PS3. However, if one already owns a PS3, not to necessarily run out and get a 360.

Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see if new areas are added with the 360 DLC - or simply new missions. Some guess that the long wait between episodes is indicative of something more down the pike, than just mission building.
