If you were like us then when you saw Wii Music once it was announced at E3 then you likely just rolled your eyes and moved onto the next story about Gears of War 2 or Fallout 3 or something else that actually looked appealing. While many around the gaming world dismissed Wii Music as simplistic and nothing more than a gimmick to lighten the wallets of casual gamers, Nintendo believes that they may have accidentally misled us all on just how deep the game truly is.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime would like to clear the air:

"What’s powerful in Wii Music is this juxtaposition of something that looks so simple but is wonderfully difficult to master. We may have done that title an injustice at E3 by showing something that looked so easy," he continued. "We made it appear too simple. Now we’re showing the tremendous variety of instruments and tones and how challenging it is to make music that sounds good."

I will admit, what was shown at E3 both at the Nintendo press conference and on the show floor was quite simple and ultimately very boring, but it seems like that might just be the tip of the iceberg. Looking around at various updated hands-on impressions, a lot of my fellow journalists are starting to come around on Wii Music, saying that it’s not Guitar Hero , but it doesn’t want to be those things, and may just be able to easily carve out a niche all its own. Could Nintendo turn this game around and transform it from what appeared to be a surefire flop into an absolute success? We’ll see when Wii Music launches next month.
