Nintendo of America announced this week that this, the first week of the 2007 holiday shopping season, has resulted in more sales then any other time in the corporation’s history. The Nintendo DS shattered a record all on it’s own when it was reported that over 653,000 of the handheld device were sold to consumers over the Thanksgiving which handily broke the previous record sales figured held by the Nintendo Gameboy which sold 600,000 during 2005’s Thanksgiving weekend. The Nintendo Wii also held it’s own during this shopping period as 350,000 of the home consoles were purchased, a figure that has resulted in the largest sale of Wii’s since the console was launched a year ago. The Wii has been reported to be the number one gift item for gamers this year and, as a reuslt of this, Nintendo is continuing to increase it’s stock of Wii consoles to prepare for the holiday rush.
The Wii has it’s own so far unbreakable record as 5 million of the Wii consoles have been sold at a rate faster then any other console ever released in the United States. George Harrison, the Senior Vice President for Nintendo of America’s marketing and corporate communications division, stated that one reason for the Wii’s success is due to the affordability of the console. Mr Harrison was quoted as saying that “"As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family”. Mr. Harrison also went onto add that the Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family” and are “ the most fun video game experiences at the most affordable price."
