Ever since Nov. 19, 2006 the Wii has pretty much dominated the sales figures. Pulling out numbers that often times doubled those of the 360 and PS3. In Japan, the 360 has been suffering in sales because of the very few games that appeal to the Japanese market. The Wii had brought its cheap price and abundance of casual/puzzle games to the board, two great loves of the Japanese people.
But with good games comes good sales…
A couple of weeks back Microsoft released Tales of Vesperia, the tenth title in the Tales series which is an Xbox 360 exclusive J-RPG. The Tales games are extremely popular in Japan and many hardcore Japanese gamers have probably been marking their days off their calendars for this one. But then, they suddenly realized that something was very, very important. They didn’t have a 360! Which lead to the spike in 360 sales they had last month and Microsoft announcing that 360’s were completely and utterly sold out in Japan. The sales of the 360 for the next couple of weeks began to fall due to the lack of consoles. But Microsoft was just stocking up their supplies, and at their pre-TGS event, they announced their price-drop that would occur in Japan starting September 11th. They pushed all their units out on this day and put the price-drop in motion. This of course, drove sales even higher.
Famitsu has reported the sales figures of all three consoles in Japan for the week of September 8th-14th. According to Famitsu, the 360 barely nudged out the Wii with a mere 1,624 extra units. Here are the sales figures for all three consoles provided by Enterbrain:
• Xbox 360: 28,681 units
• Wii: 27,057 units
• PLAYSTATON 3: 8,050 units
According to Enterbrain, the week before, Xbox 360’s only sold a laughable amount of 843 units. Well, would you look at them now. I’m sure Microsoft is very happy about this and will make an official comment on the subject soon. But this could bring up the question, “will Final Fantasy XIII making it to Japan?” I mean, they’ve clearly got a market their now. If I were Microsoft, I would definitely go for it.
