Having seen the Rock Band Ion Drum Kit in person, I can say that it’s pretty sweet. While I’m not willing to spend $300 on the set (I’m terrible at drums and don’t want to spend that kind of money on something that will simply mock me from the corner of my living room), there are a lot of people out there who are pumped about getting their hands on the set. Sadly, that might turn out to be quite difficult.
Apparently, many retailers are not going to stock the drums in stores due to their sheer size and weight. In retail, where space is at a premium, stocking a large number of bulky objects is usually not good for business, as they take up space that can be used for smaller, cheaper, easier to sell items. So in short, don’t expect to walk into Best Buy and see a wall of Ion Drums staring back at you.
So what’s a lowly consumer to do? Sure, you could order the drums online and pay massive shipping fees, but if you’re patient, GameStop might just have a better solution. The retail giant won’t be placing the Ion kits in every store, but instead will be utilizing certain locations as hubs, which can send the drums out to other locations. Basically, you walk into your local GameStop, tell them you want the drums, and they put in the order. If feasible, the hub store will ship the drums to your local store, where you can go pick them up. However, GameStop is also reserving the option to ship the drums directly to you if that’s the cheaper alternative. Either way, if you’re willing to wait a few days, you can get the drums without paying shipping or checking every store in the tri-county area.
So anyone interested in taking GameStop up on their offer? Or are you just going to look the drums up online and snag them through a free shipping promotion? Or will you just be staying away from the drums altogether for fear of personal injury?
