A forum post over at Electronic Theater, a U.K gaming board, featured the announcement that Disaster: Day of Crisis for the Wii, which was a title that received a great deal of interest during E3 and a large amount of speculation afterward, has received a release date in Europe. The game has been designed with the aim of attracting hardcore gamers- a demographic the Wii has trouble attracting. The story of the game centers around one Raymond Brice, a highly decorated Marine officer who retired after suffering emotional trauma after his best friend was killed on a mission. Brice has been reactivated in order to combat the forces of Surge. While fighting this foe players will experience a number of situations including the hunt for survivors to shooting matches and swimming and diving missions across 23 levels.
This is all very exciting, but the question asked by the people at Electronic Theater is whether this will be enough to attract further interest from gamers who want a more well rounded gaming library on the Wii console. To determine the amount of buzz that this game is generating, Electronic Gaming put up a poll to find out how many people want such a game and are planning on playing it. The voting pool was small, no more 5 voters, but those who own a Wii seemed to be interested in adding Day of Crisis to their collection.
The advent of a more well rounded gaming library for the Wii can’t hurt but it can only be hoped that what made the console innovative, it’s cornering of the casual gaming market, will not become overshadowed by the need to games for bigger bangs for bigger bucks. Games of wide breadth and scope are good things indeed, and I enjoy them as much as anyone, but the variety that the Wii offers is the system’s greatest strength.
