Boom Blox Sells 450K, Surprises Everyone
Posted by Lucas Tollini, 166 days ago Jul 30, 2008 12:55

Steven Spielberg’s quirky, Jenga-style videogame was praised by reviewers and accepted by hardcore gamers despite its casual style. But many were surprised when EA announced the first sales figures of Boom Blox. EA had said that the game had sold approximately 60,000 copies in the month of May. This minuscule number shocked everyone, and many thought, “How could a game with Spielberg’s name on it sell so poorly?”

It turns out that Boom Blox is actually doing very well: the 60,000 sales figure actually only accounted for a week of sales, letting Spielberg and the development team breathe a bit easier.

Boom Blox was released on May 6th and continues to sell very well, according to EA CEO John Riccitiello. With 450K sold already and the game nearing the half-million mark, it looks like the game turned out to be a great success. Spielberg and the team are probably rolling around in their pools of money while laughing like little girls as we speak. But is this good for the hardcore crowd? It’s never a good thing when a game like Horsez or Catz sells well on the system. Is Boom Blox one of those games or is it good enough to be accepted by the real gamers?
