Nintendo May Build MotionPlus Into Future Wiimotes
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, 175 days ago Jul 21, 2008 17:04

One of the few interesting events to come out of Nintendo during E3 was the announcement of the new MotionPlus peripheral. This device is expected to up the sensitivity of the Wiimote’s accelerometers and create a true 1:1 motion-capture device. The device was on display on the show floor for Wii Sports Resort, and it truly does make a big difference in the controller’s sensitivity.

Now, Nintendo Analysis and Development Director Katsuya Eguchi has hinted that MotionPlus might be built into future Wii controllers, ushering in a new wave of motion control for all Wii games. At a developer roundtable, Eguchi mentioned that Nintendo is "looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in," hinting that there may come a point where the current Wiimote is abandoned in favor of only those with MotionPlus already installed.

Of course, this raises the spectre of a time when all Wii games will be forced to integrate MotionPlus, leaving earlier adopters who may not be able to procure a new controller left out in the cold. If getting a MotionPlus controller is as complicated as getting a Balance Board, and if games start requiring the use of such a controller, then the possibility of unhappy campers rising exponentially.
