Sony was pretty sure the month of June held big things for the PS3. With the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, the company was expecting to see a huge bump in PS3 sales in Japan. Some folks began wondering if the PS3 might even dethrone the mighty Wii, if only for a time, due to the sheer immensity of the MGS4 launch, coupled with the fact that June was a fairly low-profile month for Wii releases. The numbers are in, and it turns out that even with Snake leading the charge, the PS3 was unable to even come close to breaking the Wii’s stranglehold on the number one spot in Japan.
According to the numbers, the Wii sold 235,990 consoles in June, while the PS3 managed only 139,494. Granted, Sony will still be happy with the sales bump (these numbers are still well above and beyond what the PS3 normally does), but considering that not even the release of a "killer app" is enough to surpass the Wii, it may just be that Sony will have to be happy settling for second place in Japan for this console generation. We all keep waiting for Wii sales to come crashing back to earth, but with each passing month of absolutely huge numbers it just starts to seem like that simply won’t happen, and Nintendo’s newest console might just be a genuine phenomenon.
