Gears of War managed to win itself a lot of praise when it was released. Sure, the story was awful and the characters were all terrible stereotypes, but the multiplayer was awesome! Well, it was mostly awesome, at least until people started learning how to exploit the imbalances and make it generally miserable for any who who didn’t have a shotgun. But that’s all going away now according to our old buddy Cliff Bleszinski.
"People loved it but they didn’t like the host advantage," he told Gamepro. "They got tired of the shotgun inconsistencies. We’re fixing all of that. They didn’t like the randomness of the chainsaw, so we put the chainsaw duel in - may the best man win!"
He also promised some fun new modes, including Wingman. This mode will consist of five teams of two battling each other until only one team is left standing, which Bleszinski explains as "you and a buddy versus the world."
So let’s get out our Gears 2 checklist and have a look. Improved emphasis on story in the single-player? Check. Less stereotypical characters (a.k.a., the "No Coletrain Rule")? Check. More balanced and varied multiplayer? Check and check. Yes, well everything seems to be in order so whenever you want to go ahead and ship this one out Mr. B, we’ll all proceed to wet ourselves with excitement.
