Laurent Fischer, Nintendo’s Managing Director of Marketing, made a big no-no earlier this week with comments regarding the social status of those who desire more storage on the Wii for downloadable games. In a statement to Videogaming247, Fischer says, “I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn’t use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence. I regret that this misunderstanding has created such offence and disappointment within the community."
So what part, exactly, do you regret? Just the reaction your comments drove? That you implied how silly the desire for more space is and that it was largely out of the question (a similar comment by Sony’s Phil Harrison comes to mind, a comment about rumble in controllers)? Looking at the amazing selection of downloadable titles your console offers, it seems incredibly foolish not to offer more than SD cards for game storage; you can even charge a ridiculous amount for a hard drive stamped with the Nintendo logo! Have a chat with Microsoft, that plan seems to be working pretty well for them.
With everything that’s gone wrong for the PS3, Sony made a very wise decision to allow for a number of different storage devices, including standard hard drives. Only geeks and otaku may know how to change them out, but there’s nothing stopping everyone else from calling the Geek Squad and making it happen. Way to drop the ball on this issue, Nintendo!
