Have any of you out there bought the Nyko wireless nunchuck controller for the Wii yet? Thus far, I haven’t personally seen any reason to invest, seeing as I’m yet to play a Wii game which requires me to splay my arms so far apart that I risk yanking the wire right out of the bottom of the Wiimote. Nintendo doesn’t seem to like the idea either. In fact, they dislike it so much that they’re suing Nyko over the whole thing.
Nintendo claims that Nyko’s controller "wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuck controller." This, in Nintendo’s eyes, constitutes violation of patent and copyright law, and means that the Nyko products should be pulled from shelves immediately. Nyko’s response at this point is to claim that, "We have not knowingly violated anyone’s intellectual property and we’re still examining this."
Presumably, if Nintendo succeeds in getting the Nyko controller pulled from the market then that would clear the way for them to release their own wireless nunchuck, at a much higher price of course. But then people would start throwing those through TVs just like they were doing with the Wiimotes, so Nintendo would have to release yet another sleeve to keep butterfingers from winging their controllers across the room. Maybe you should just drop the whole suit, Nintendo, then you don’t have to worry about anyone suing you over putting a Nunchuck-shaped hole right through the middle of their $3,000 TV.
